francescalillie asked: I am nearing the end of high school, and would really love to work in fashion magazines. I was just wondering whether it is crucial to go to university and have a degree, or if I should intern first and see where it takes me. What is your opinion? Love your blog!!

when you’re in an entry-level position at a fashion magazine, the tasks can be quite tedious: photo-copying, scheduling, organizing, answering phones, generally being as supportive to your boss as possible. does it sound like you need to go to college to do any of that? not really, right? but all that said, I still recommend going to university. I know my alma mater (Johns Hopkins) will frown at this, but college is so much more about social skills, time management, leadership, self confidence, opening your mind to possibilities than about your major or degree. no matter how self-possessed and strong you are in high school, going to university and being surrounded by peers will help you learn more about yourself. go to uni—intern every summer—that’s the power combination
