I'm just being curious, Is your favorite color's black? Because i noticed that your outfit are usually black or gray, i'm just saying, but you are rocking it tho!! I like :D.
wait until you see my outfit today, it’s like quintuple black! black is an easy color to wear, I’m not sure if it’s my favorite color though—that really depends on my mood (consistent favorite colors include dove grey, graphite, chartreuse, poppy red, and blush pink). I think most fashion folk like black because it’s fool-proof—you can just grab a jumble of clothes in the morning and it will (more or less) match.
I tend to go to extremes when it comes to jewelry. I either like wildly expensive things that I can’t really afford (cough, diamond studded Carter Love bracelet) or things that are bitsy and adorable and (generally) more affordable. I like to pick things up on my travels—I bought a ton of teeny earrings in Seoul and Shanghai—because it makes things more special. but, state-side, I love Eddie Borgo (amazing statement pieces—and he is so nice), Scosha (adorable stringy little bracelets and tiny earrings), Helen Ficalora (she does great thin bands), Sydney Evan (I have a few thin diamond bands from her), and Jennifer Meyer. for fun “temporary” (you wear it a few times and then you get sick of it! and then go shopping again, hooray), there’s Urban Outfitters. and, once again, never forget ebay…
I know you're (trying) to change your bag everyday, but if you had to carry one bag the rest of your life, what would it be?
I like that you put “trying” in parentheses—a subtle “it’ll be really hard, good luck” message, haha. your question is basically impossible to answer but if I had to, I suppose I’d opt for a classic quilted Chanel 2.55 in the large size. for day, I’d be able to smoosh in all my essentials (Smythson planner, wallet, gloss, hand sanitizer, hand cream, sunglasses) and wear it as a cross-body or shoulder bag. at night, I could tuck in the chains and carry it as a (giant) clutch. now, let’s hope the day never comes where I only could carry one bag for the rest of my life…
Hi Eva!! I just wanted to say that I love your blog, think its so inspirational! I was wondering whether to work in the fashion buisness (magazine, styling, etc.) you have to be a certain size. I heard that they don't hire you if your not 'thin' enough, in your opinion is it true?
well… it depends. if you want to be a runway model, yes, you have to be thin—crazy thin—as in sample size, which is about a size 0-2. models are the loveliest of genetic freaks (no offense to all my model buddies). in terms of other fashion careers, I personally think it’s less about size and more about the fact that you’re showing that you are polished and care about the way you look (which, frankly, is important in any professional environment). that might not translate to sample size, but in the fashion biz it does generally mean fit and trim. there are definitely people who take that too far—or get sucked into fashion stereotypes—but those people are in the minority, no matter how mainstream media chooses to portray magazine/fashion folk.
Hi Eva! As an undergraduate student with only 3 semesters left of my college career my sense of style has changed over the years as I've gotten older. I now prefer quality over quanity; clothes, shoes, and accessories that are well made and will still look in style several years later. I actually don't have a huge wardrobe because of this, that and I'm a college student on a budget. What's your advice for obtaining a stylish, quality wardrobe, with excellent pieces while having a modest budget?
your motto—quality over quantity—is an excellent one. it’s one that most magazine editors actually (try to) adhere to. most of us will splurge on a few investment pieces a year (classic bags, shoes, or clothing that are chic but timeless) and supplement that with fast fashion buys from Zara, H&M, Topshop, and ASOS. so, keep up the good work… and never forget the power of ebay. ;)
Hey eva! Do you have any diets or workouts you follow? Lol you never answer my questions :(
I’m a vegetarian (well, technically an ovo-lacto-pescetarian, as I eat fish, eggs, and occasionally cheese) but to be honest I’m rarely on a “diet.” I think the best way to be healthy (and happy) is to eat what you please, as long as everything is in moderation—and as long as most things are “whole foods:” unrefined and unprocessed, straight from the earth always wins. in terms of exercise, I love yoga and pilates and try to each each once a week. I despise cardio but one of my 2012 resolutions is to do it at least twice a week. and, as a true New Yorker, I walk a ton! ps: I don’t mean to ignore your questions but the sheer volume of my inbox is scary and intimidating. if you have future questions, ask via twitter @evachen212. I usually respond within 24 hours on that account!
What are the best lip balms/chapsticks? I've been using the same one for some time now, but it doesn't seem to cut it. I think I need something new.
there are a few things in life (well, most things, really) that are a matter of personal preference: jeans, mascara… and lip balm. some people like a waxier texture, others a sheerer finish. here are some of my favorites in a variety of finishes: *liquidy: The Body Shop 100% Natural Lip Roll On. it’s almost like a face oil for the lips, if that makes any sense *waxy but sheer balm: I’ve been digging Glo-Minerals Cherry Balm. tastes like cherry Lifesavers and is SPF15! *tinted balms: Burt’s Bees. enough said! *all-time favorite: Dr. Hauschka lipcare stick *in case of dry lips emergency: Neosporin Overnight Lip Renewal
Hi Eva.(: Do you have any fashion tip to wear to school? Nowadays, girls basically wear bootie shorts and crop tops to school. They look cute and all, but that is not my style and some may even find it tacky. Do you have any suggestions?
let your school hallways be your personal runway, express yourself! but ~shudder~ oh my word, please do not wear bootie shorts and crop tops to school. that doesn’t sound remotely stylish (or comfortable. or professional. which I know sounds odd but sooner or later your teachers will be writing college recommendations for you—which are important!)
hi eva! just out of curiosity how did you come up with evachen212 for your polyvore, tumblr, and twitter accounts?
woa, first time I’ve been asked this question! I came up with the evachen212 handle ages and ages ago when I was in college in Baltimore but desperately missing New York City. 212 is the area code here and it means home to me!
