I’m a vegetarian (well, technically an ovo-lacto-pescetarian, as I eat fish, eggs, and occasionally cheese) but to be honest I’m rarely on a “diet.” I think the best way to be healthy (and happy) is to eat what you please, as long as everything is in moderation—and as long as most things are “whole foods:” unrefined and unprocessed, straight from the earth always wins. in terms of exercise, I love yoga and pilates and try to each each once a week. I despise cardio but one of my 2012 resolutions is to do it at least twice a week. and, as a true New Yorker, I walk a ton! ps: I don’t mean to ignore your questions but the sheer volume of my inbox is scary and intimidating. if you have future questions, ask via twitter @evachen212. What are the best lip balms/chapsticks? I've been using the same one for some time now, but it doesn't seem to cut it. I think I need something new.
there are a few things in life (well, most things, really) that are a matter of personal preference: jeans, mascara… and lip balm. some people like a waxier texture, others a sheerer finish. here are some of my favorites in a variety of finishes: *liquidy: The Body Shop 100% Natural Lip Roll On. it’s almost like a face oil for the lips, if that makes any sense *waxy but sheer balm: I’ve been digging Glo-Minerals Cherry Balm. tastes like cherry Lifesavers and is SPF15! *tinted balms: Burt’s Bees. enough said! *all-time favorite: Dr. Hauschka lipcare stick *in case of dry lips emergency: Neosporin Overnight Lip Renewal
Hi Eva.(: Do you have any fashion tip to wear to school? Nowadays, girls basically wear bootie shorts and crop tops to school. They look cute and all, but that is not my style and some may even find it tacky. Do you have any suggestions?
let your school hallways be your personal runway, express yourself! but ~shudder~ oh my word, please do not wear bootie shorts and crop tops to school. that doesn’t sound remotely stylish (or comfortable. or professional. which I know sounds odd but sooner or later your teachers will be writing college recommendations for you—which are important!)

Hey, I want to sport more, but I am really, really, really lazy. Really, really lazy. Have you got any tips?
I love that you’re not just lazy but really, really, really lazy. and then two more reallys. ^.^ that’s really funny. well, I’m in the same boat as you. I’m not the most motivated when it comes to working out because I could, in theory, work 24 hours a day. but I force myself to exercise because I know I’ll feel better afterwards (not to mention fit into my clothes, ahem). here are some of my tactics for hauling my really, really, really lazy self to the gym: *write down planned workouts into my schedule (and program into my iphone) *make plans with friends that involve exercise (I’m rockclimbing with my bestie next week, walking my friend’s dog/window-shopping with her, etc) *start small. make a pact to work out at least twice a week—that’s once during the week, once during the weekend. that’s manageable, no? *most importantly, find something you love to do. I abhor the treadmill, so I avoid it at all costs. but I do love yoga and pilates, so I actually look forward to those workouts. good luck!
How do you keep your hands/cuticles so nice? What do ya use?
I find it pretty bizarre that my nails are so healthy considering I muck with them every few days to give myself a DIY manicure. some of my cardinal hand/nail rules: *I never, ever paint on the cuticle. I feel like that causes your nails and cuticles to get a bit funky. *I always, always use base coat, especially when painting my nails with super-chunky glitter, which can scratch up the surface of the nail. *when I use a body scrub, I use it on my hands and feet as well *I apply hand cream like crazy—I keep a large one with a pump dispenser by my desk! *I take biotin and fish oil supplements. seems like a lot, but it’s worth it, I think!
I am a freshman in high school, and I wanted to know if you have any tips for me? :)
why, yes. I have some tips for you. I’m sure you meant fashion tips but too bad for you—you’re getting life tips. my advice: *ignore the haters and the people who only make you feel bad or insecure about yourself. in time, you’ll realize they’re just projecting their fears onto you *explore all you can academically. there’s no penalty for being too educated or knowing too much about everything. I always wish I had taken more music and art classes. *listen and respect your parents (sorry, this is boring advice) and realize they almost always have your best interests in mind—but always have your own opinion too and don’t be afraid to voice them. the same holds true for high school friends. don’t be afraid to not be exactly like everyone else. *even though it might seem weird, talk to and learn from as many people—no matter what age—you can. you never know if your mom’s friend’s cousin who works at a museum might be able to give you your first internship *enjoy being a teen. it’s full of angst, yes, and can be crazy-stressful but… it’s amazing. and you’ll survive
Hi Eva, I just started university and I'm studying linguistics. I know it seems a little odd, but I would really like to go into journalism and preferably fashion journalism. I found a work experience program but I need to send a covering letter. What sort of things do you put in a covering letter? My CV is fairly generic, volunteering, a part-time life-guarding job and babysitting. So I'm a little worried that my application will look random.
well, you’re a freshman (or “fresher” as they call it in the UK, right?) so I wouldn’t expect your CV to be super-star-crazy-amazing. at your experience level, I’m looking for someone who has demonstrated an interest in writing (perhaps with experience on the school paper or a personal blog). in terms of cover letters, hmm, that’s a separate matter. there are two very different stances on cover letters. I personally only skim them and so I’m looking for a (quick) sense of your writing ability, that it captures me, has heart, and explains your passion for magazines. what I’m not looking for is a recitation of your CV. let your (brief, no longer than three or four paragraph) cover letter be the heart, since your CV serves as the bones and structure (clubs, committees, GPA, major, etc).
Is it true there are certain foods that give your skin a healthy glow? If so, what are they?
I’m a firm believer in the fact that your lifestyle has as much—if not more—to do with the way your skin looks than what you put on it. and what you put in your body is a top factor in the way it looks—if you feed your body junk (processed/fast/deep fried/anything with tongue-twister ingredients), it will end up showing on your face as well (in addition to your waistline, sigh). there’s a long list of skin super foods, but some of my favorites are: leafy greens like kale, spinach, watercress; citrus fruits for vitamin C (as a topical ingredient it’s also great but it’s not so stable); berries; carrots (beta-carotene); avocados (healthy fats keep the lipid barrier in skin strong. I take fish oil supplements too) and, for hair and nails, lean proteins like fish, shrimp, and tofu. other must-dos for great skin? exercise (boosts circulation) and—something that’s been lacking from my life lately—sleep
Hello hello! Every year I make these lofty new years resolutions that I will eat better, exercise more, and live healthier--resolutions which seem to fade by the first week into January! Any tips on how I can keep up my motivation to live a healthy lifestyle/make it attainable?
you’re not alone! I make the same resolution every year as well—as does the whole galaxy, I think. my resolution this year (which will begin only when I’m back from vacation, let’s be real) is to mostly only eat foods that have a positive impact on my body (more “whole” foods like fruits, vegetables, less refined/processed/manufactured items like bread, cupcakes, etc). to that end, I’ll stock my fridge with only good items and toss or donate items that don’t fall into that category. to motivate myself to go to the gym, I’m investing in some cute workout outfits from Adidas, Puma, Under Armour, and Lululemon. yes, I’ll be one of “those” girls at the gym in a full look, but if it works, hey, who cares! I’m putting said outfits into little pouches (clean, unused shoe bags) so that anytime I need to go to the gym I’ll just grab a pouch and go—no excuses allowed
