Hi Eva! Something that I have always wondered is the rules of mixing gold and silver accessories such as rings or bracelets. What's your opinion on this? x
I love my dad very, very much but he once pointed out to me that I was wearing a (gasp!) silver bracelet with a (shudder) gold watch. oh, dad (shaking head): so old school. I think the less “on purpose” bracelets and accessories feel, the better! mix up gold, silver, rose gold, friendship bracelets, hair bands, Silly Bandz, whatever! my arm party heros are Man Repeller, Dannijo, and, mais oui, Teen Vogue’s Mary Kate Steinmiller and Shiona Turini. have fun!
Hi Eva! I just wanted to know how you balance your career and your love life. It seems that, in today's time, you always have to pick one or the other. Thanks!
well, this is a first! I haven’t been asked a romantic life question ever (btw, that’s not an invitation for more people to ask, okay?!). anyway, here are my eight cents (because two is not enough): life will always be a balancing act no matter what you do—magazines, medicine, law, finance, teaching, zoologist, etc. love, work, family, friends, hobbies: there isn’t a one size fits all solution. some people will choose to prioritize one over the others. it’s a very personal decision. but I believe that there can and should be a balance. all the different parts of your life should complement each other. and if you’re lucky enough to have love (whether it’s from family, friends, or a “romantic partner” (ugh, that’s such a cheesy way of putting it)), you should make time to enjoy and celebrate it
“It is the day of my birthday, August 19. I was born under the sign of Leo—the lion. And I am just like the lion: I will bring out my claws to protect myself against being hurt. But believe me, it is harder for me to lash out at someone than to have someone lash out at me”—
What's the craziest thing someone's done to snag an internship at Teen Vogue?
honestly, crazy doesn’t work to get you an internship! if anything, people are turned off by that! I think the best way to get an internship is by being polite, persistent (but not naggy), well-organized (apply three months in advance, not three weeks), and passionate. any chance you get to meet an editor (book signings, store events), go! that might be the foot in the door you need. good luck!
Hi Eva! I'm not sure if someone asked you this already but I'm going to give it a shot since I was wondering. If you can go back and give advice to your 17 year old self about anything (style, fashion, personal, etc) what would it be?
what a great question! there’s so much I’d tell my teen self. I’d tell myself to follow my heart, always. stop caring about what other people think because, really, they don’t matter (still trying to follow this advice, it can be hard). be confident, or at least pretend to be confident (no one can tell the difference). listen to your mom more—stand up straighter! take better care of your skin and teeth because, well, it’s cumulative and how you treat yourself when you’re 17 makes a difference in how you look at 30. and, mostly, be yourself. don’t feel like you have to know exactly what or who that is. but you can feel what’s right and true in your heart and soul (cue the cheesy music). don’t compromise that!
are you guys at Teen Vogue doing anything for FNO this year?
why, yes! Teen Vogue is indeed doing something for FNO! we’ll be in the Bleecker Street area (cross street: West 11th) and we’ll have a performance from Sky Ferreira, we’ll be selling crazycool Teen Vogue editor designed Vans, and offering free Essie manicures (you know that has my name all over it, right?)! and, of course, more! all the editors will be there, so come on down to meet us :D
What are your favorite brands of nail polishes and why? I’d like to get some new ones. I already use OPI and China Glaze
asking me to choose my favorite polish brand is like asking me to choose between my (imaginary/yet to be born children). I love them all for different reasons! OPI’s brush works the best for me and my relatively wide nailbeds. I adore Essie always, especially their fall collection. Deborah Lippmann’s sparkle and color-forward thinking can’t be beat! Zoya for rich pigments. Rimmel and Sally Hansen are great for quick DIY-ing. Orly for base coats and treatment products. And I love CND and Nails Inc for their cool sparkly and special effects-y topcoats.
Hello, I see you mixing prints, and it looks so fab! I'm always so afraid of doing it. What are some of your tips to mixing prints?
I love mixing prints! it’s a particularly Teen Vogue thing to do, if you ask me. to be honest, I was very leery of mixing prints, even a year ago. then, at a certain point, I said to myself, “oh, why not?" and just started doing it! basically that’s my #1 tip: don’t overthink it and just do it. you’ll learn what works and what doesn’t (like mixing different sizes of prints: I tend not to do two "big" prints together). have fun and go crazy!
What are some of the hottest fall nail colors? I'm dying to try something other than my basic pink or red.
the two adjectives I use to describe fall polish are swampy and dusty. I realize that neither of them sound particularly appealing. :) but think mysteriously murky shades like olive greens, dirty navy, and bruised eggplant or girly shades put through the wash a few too many times: dirty lilacs, distressed ballet slippers, the like. personally, I’m in love!
