I'm headed off to college in a few days and my intended major is fashion design. I am so excited! However, I am also really interested in journalism, possibly working for a fashion magazine one day. Do you have any tips or ideas for me to be able to get involved with the writing aspect of fashion while I am still in school?
Congratulations on being college-bound! My answer is pretty obvious and deeply boring: intern. Then intern some more. And just when you thought you couldn’t intern anymore, intern some more! Work experience is the best way to land a job in magazines, period. If you aren’t going to be in a major metropolitan area, start a fashion column at your school paper or a street style blog or *something*. basically, make it happen somehow and practice makes perfect! Good luck!
Hi Eva! I love your blog and the fact that you take the time to answer questions. I never know what to wear when it rains (mostly because I don't want to ruin my leather shoes and handbags) and want to know if you have any tips or tricks for staying stylish in wet weather. Especially for us NYC girls who don't drive and have to walk/take cabs everywhere :) Thank you!
such a timely question given the fact that Irene is barreling towards NYC as I type. I have a pair of wellies for when it rains super heavily (and Sorel boots in the winter, for snow). a lot of the ladies at the office wear LL Bean duck boots as well! I think the key is just to, um, not care. people wear their fabulous outfits and then you look down at their feet and they have clompy rubber boots on—it’s a bit of a disconnect but is chic in an ironic way! you see this a lot in February at fashion week. in terms of bags, I’ll use a patent leather bag or just carry a basic cotton tote
How do you stay fashion forward in college? I'll be a freshman this fall and unfortunately, have been to a private school my whole life. Not to mention, I'm going to school where it rains all the time and it'll be my first winter experience. I seriously have no clue
oftentimes (at least in my day), people use college as an excuse to dress like a total schlub: sleepwear or sporting gear as daytime attire. shoes meant for the beach, shower, or gardening as footwear. the horror! the absolute and abject horror! so the fact that you’re trying, period, is impressive and will probably put you on the best-dressed list. I would put together a wardrobe of easy pieces—skinny jeans, cute tops (I love Equipment blouses and Kain t-shirts), and cozy oversized sweaters (think Vince) that are basically interchangeable and grab-straight-out-of-the-closet-and-throw-on-able. your life will be going through a major transition come fall, so your wardrobe should be as smooth and stressfree as possible! and invest in a pair of classic Hunter boots. sounds like you’ll be needing them ;)
Hi Eva! Something that I have always wondered is the rules of mixing gold and silver accessories such as rings or bracelets. What's your opinion on this? x
I love my dad very, very much but he once pointed out to me that I was wearing a (gasp!) silver bracelet with a (shudder) gold watch. oh, dad (shaking head): so old school. I think the less “on purpose” bracelets and accessories feel, the better! mix up gold, silver, rose gold, friendship bracelets, hair bands, Silly Bandz, whatever! my arm party heros are Man Repeller, Dannijo, and, mais oui, Teen Vogue’s Mary Kate Steinmiller and Shiona Turini. have fun!
Hi Eva! I just wanted to know how you balance your career and your love life. It seems that, in today's time, you always have to pick one or the other. Thanks!
well, this is a first! I haven’t been asked a romantic life question ever (btw, that’s not an invitation for more people to ask, okay?!). anyway, here are my eight cents (because two is not enough): life will always be a balancing act no matter what you do—magazines, medicine, law, finance, teaching, zoologist, etc. love, work, family, friends, hobbies: there isn’t a one size fits all solution. some people will choose to prioritize one over the others. it’s a very personal decision. but I believe that there can and should be a balance. all the different parts of your life should complement each other. and if you’re lucky enough to have love (whether it’s from family, friends, or a “romantic partner” (ugh, that’s such a cheesy way of putting it)), you should make time to enjoy and celebrate it
“It is the day of my birthday, August 19. I was born under the sign of Leo—the lion. And I am just like the lion: I will bring out my claws to protect myself against being hurt. But believe me, it is harder for me to lash out at someone than to have someone lash out at me”—
What's the craziest thing someone's done to snag an internship at Teen Vogue?
honestly, crazy doesn’t work to get you an internship! if anything, people are turned off by that! I think the best way to get an internship is by being polite, persistent (but not naggy), well-organized (apply three months in advance, not three weeks), and passionate. any chance you get to meet an editor (book signings, store events), go! that might be the foot in the door you need. good luck!
Hi Eva! I'm not sure if someone asked you this already but I'm going to give it a shot since I was wondering. If you can go back and give advice to your 17 year old self about anything (style, fashion, personal, etc) what would it be?
what a great question! there’s so much I’d tell my teen self. I’d tell myself to follow my heart, always. stop caring about what other people think because, really, they don’t matter (still trying to follow this advice, it can be hard). be confident, or at least pretend to be confident (no one can tell the difference). listen to your mom more—stand up straighter! take better care of your skin and teeth because, well, it’s cumulative and how you treat yourself when you’re 17 makes a difference in how you look at 30. and, mostly, be yourself. don’t feel like you have to know exactly what or who that is. but you can feel what’s right and true in your heart and soul (cue the cheesy music). don’t compromise that!
are you guys at Teen Vogue doing anything for FNO this year?
why, yes! Teen Vogue is indeed doing something for FNO! we’ll be in the Bleecker Street area (cross street: West 11th) and we’ll have a performance from Sky Ferreira, we’ll be selling crazycool Teen Vogue editor designed Vans, and offering free Essie manicures (you know that has my name all over it, right?)! and, of course, more! all the editors will be there, so come on down to meet us :D
