I met you a few times at various teen vogue events from the beauty awards breakfast to Fashion University and have to say that I am a huge fan of you not only because of your style, but because of your dedication to teenagers like me who aspire to work for Teen Vogue someday. I am always being asked the question of what my personal style is and have such a hard time answering because I am always trying new things. I will wear boyfriend jeans and aviator sunglasses one day and a pink, ruffled, sweetheart dress the next. After looking through your very fashionable photos of your outfits, I noticed you wear different trends from day to day too. What would you describe your personal style as, and what did it take for you to find it?
life is so short and full of trends, why not try them all? some days I’ll be dressed ultra girly or ladylike, other days minimal, other days quirky. I wear whatever strikes my fancy—that’s my personal style, haha. my advice to you is to dress to make yourself happy—don’t feel like you have to wear something because everyone else is, or like something just because a magazine tells you to. there’s no such thing as “in” or “out”—there’s only feeling good :)
Have you ever been discriminated against because of your race? How would you encourage other Asian girls to stand up and be proud in western societies?
I haven’t actually ever been discriminated against because of my race at work. I think, perhaps, it’s because there are so many Asians in fashion and publishing already (Vera Wang, Derek Lam, Phillip Lim, Janice Min, Alex Wang, etc). if you’re dealing with discrimination, remember that it’s a reflection of the discriminator’s ignorance and plain stupidity. rise above it—your belief in yourself and your culture (whatever you identify with!) is what matters
Hi Eva! Love your blog, it reads like a magazine. =) Question for you: what is your favorite lipstick: color, brand, texture? Thanks!
too many to name! lately I love Chanel Coco Rouge Shine in Rebelle. it’s like Lipstick Lite—it’s a bright red but goes on sheer and slightly glossy. it’s a great way to dip your toe into the world of red lipstick. I also love Tarte Lipstains because they leave gorgeous color without drying out lips, and they’re buildable so they can be light and airy or seriously pigmented! my two favorite shades are Amused (neon pink) or Lust (bright apple red)
Have you ever worn sweatpants in public? Personally, I wear them on grocery store runs from time to time.
no, never. well. not never. I wore them in college! I’m more of a legging girl anyway. and it’s not like I don’t ever dress down. I look like a wreck on the weekends! to the point where my mom is embarrassed and asks if I’m trying to look like an “Oldson twin” :)
I'm going to college upstate new york next year so I'll definitely need a good pair of warm, waterproof boots for the wintertime but i can't find any that are fashionable and affordable. Can you suggest any brands?
you know what’s funny? everyone—and I mean everyone!—at Teen Vogue’s offices wore Sorel or LL Bean duck boots all winter long (even at snowy fashion week in February!). not the most fashionable footwear, but if you dress around them properly, they look chic! which means: skinny jeans paired with cool socks, or warm and woolly tights and a little skirt… not baggy jeans or, shudder, long johns. think apres ski!
is a bob in or out this summer?!?!? I want to get rid of all my hair(:
I am a huge fan of bobs! in fact, my next, next haircut will most likely be a bob (first I’m going to go boy-short for August and September though). the great thing about bobs is that they’re timeless and chic. and when you have one, it’s an instant style statement. go for it!
I saw that you got to test Cha Cha Mango. As a lover of all the other Benetints, I would love to know how you would describe this new one. Is it more of a pink, or an orange?
yes, I did get a sneak peek of Benefit’s Cha Cha Mango tint (lucky me!). I like it a lot, it’s more of a coral hue than the others. I think it will look lovely on girls with more olive in their skin or those who are a wee bit tan. it’s a little more bold, but of course you can sheer it out!
