Do you have any suggetions for a 16 year old who adores your style for a black tie event?
why thank you! my advice is to dress for your age (check out Hailee Steinfeld—she looks amazing and she’s a teen!) and dress from the heart! wear whatever you fancy without worrying too much about what others think. I love wearing above-the-knee length hemlines even for super-serious black ties… I just juice it up with some major accessories (and crazy-high-yet-still-danceable heels). as long as you love it—that’s what matters! have a great time!
what makeup should i be going for if i have a lowbudget, pale europeanish skin, greeney/bluey/gray eyes, dark blonde hair and a few freckles? im terrible at choosing makeup so this would be a massive help!:)
oh my goodness, you can wear practically any makeup with your coloring. you have similar coloring to loads of models out there. I would peruse style.com and look at beauty shots of ones who have similar coloring to you (Constance Jablonski, Lily Donaldson come to mind). then, head to your local makeup shot and have fun! the sky’s the limit!
i love doing my nails, but i'm so spazzy that i always end up smudging them before their dry. what's your favorite quick-drying, bullet-proof, high shine (is that a lot to ask?) top coat?!
honestly speaking, the best thing for nails is good, old, boring time. you need to give them time to dry fully, that way they don’t get smudged, sheeted (what happens when you go to sleep too soon and they get crinkly), or messed up. and I’m talking, like, a full hour. that’ll keep your manicure lasting long-long-long! but if you must… I love Orly’s collection of quick-dry products!
How'd you feel when you got the call (email, letter, etc) that you'd be working at Teen Vogue?
very super-extremely-wildly excited! it all happened very quickly: I got a call from Amy Astley on a Tuesday, interviewed with her on a Wednesday, handed in my edit test on a Thursday, and got the job on Friday. whew!
I'm 22 and my skin still breaks out like I'm in high school, maybe worse. I want to improve my skin, but don't know where to start. Moisturizers? Face Wash? Medicine? I don't know what part of my routine (which is just moisturizer) to change. Any suggestions?
well, first I think you need to pinpoint the cause of your acne. is it stress? hormones? a lackluster skincare regimen? in general, though, I would recommend a) setting up a skincare regimen that you always follow. I don’t care if it’s four AM and you’re exhausted from studying. you’re going to wash your face, use a serum, and then moisturize, ok? b) look for products with salicylic acid. c) consider a visit to a dermatologist! many insurance companies will cover it if it’s for acne (versus cosmetic procedures such as, uh, botox). good luck and feel free to tweet me questions @evachen212. I’m much faster on twitter ;)
What fashion college would you reccomend? (NY) Because I've read reveiws and I now have mixed thoughts... :( (fashion design, photography)
every school is good for something different—say, RISD/Parson’s versus a school like SCAD or FIDM. I would visit as many as you can and talk to as many current students or alumni to get a sense of what would suit you and your interests most. also, keep in mind, there’s no one route into fashion. you don’t necessarily have to go to a fashion school! 99% of editors did not attend a fashion school! good luck!
hi eva! are there any tips for growing your hair faster? mine is a little longer than shoulder length now but i'd love to grow it longer for the summer so i can sport fishtail plaits:) also, are there any tips for growing taller? i'm sixteen now and i hope i'm not finished growing!
a hairdresser friend of mine swear by biotin (a b vitamin) and folic acid. another friend of mine swears that exercise boosts hair growth because it increases circulation (makes sense, I suppose!). in terms of growing taller—a lot of that is a) genetics b) posture and c) really tall shoes. I didn’t get taller until I was 18, by the way, so don’t lose faith!
Hi Eva! Let me just say, I'm super jealous of your job and your amazingness at what you do. I want to go into Beauty PR or Beauty within a magazine because of you, but my college town isn't really "fashion forward." So, long shot, but do you already have a summer intern?
unfortunately we have interns set through the summer (we hired ‘em in January, believe it or not!) but you should definitely look into beauty PR. they always need more manpower! I would begin by making a list of your thirty (yes, thirty) favorite beauty brands. then, start researching whether they handle their PR in-house (within the company) or hire an agency. then it’s just a matter of being gutsy and emailing or calling people! good luck!
What are your recommendations for a simple black liquid eyeliner? I need something that will stay on/not fade. Thanks xx
I have four favorite liquid eyeliners! 1) Physician’s Formula Eye Booster: it contains an ingredient that helps strengthen lashes and it doesn’t smudge. 2) CoverGirl Line Exact: I like that it’s teeny tiny so it’s great for travel and it’s easy to control 3) Hourglass Cosmetics Script Precision Liquid Liner: the brush is tinytinytiny so it’s great for detail work 4) Make Up For Ever: it lasts forever and a day. have fun playing! xx
