in a word: no! in a few more words: not at all! everyone at Teen Vogue is young, cool, and—to be perfectly honest—exceedingly well-behaved. no tossed coats or imperious glares here! what most movies (Devil Wears Prada, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, etc) and TV programs gloss over is the incredible work ethic that most magazine people have. I feel lucky to work with such a smart, driven bunch!
I'm a recent graduate and am thinking of relocating to New York to pursue a career in the fashion industry. I currently reside in California and have been applying to various jobs in NYC, but am still waiting to hear back. Do you think I would have a higher chance at landing interviews if I relocated to NYC before applying to more jobs?
one trillion percent yes. you pretty much have to move to NYC before you land a job in fashion. it shows that you believe in yourself enough to move cross-country, that you’re willing to take a (calculated) risk, that fashion is a long-term dream and investment of yours and not a hobby or capricious whim. when hiring, employers are also looking for someone who can start, like, in six hours from now, which means living in NYC will give you the upper hand in that respect as well. I know it’s a scary notion and that NYC can seem daunting or intimidating, but it’s a crucial first step
